Established in 1792, Riverhead Town originally was a farming community located on the eastern end of Suffolk County on Long Island's North Fork. To this day the town remains tied to its roots, but wineries and vineyards have replaced most of the acres originally utilized as potato, califlower and broccoli fields.
The town itself is currently divided, west to east, by two main roadways - Old Country Road (Also known as Route 58) and Main Street (Also known as Route 25).
Route 58 is considered the "new" section of town, with explosive growth creating a modern retail enviorment and forming it into a local shopping mecca, which is well worth the trip from anywhere on Long Island.
Route 25 runs through the downtown area, where you will find an interesting array of sights, shops and great restaurants.
Both roads merge east of town and run out past Long Island's World Famous North Fork Wineries. Lining this rural route you wil also find numerous farm stands, roadside shops and summertime yard sales. This all combines to give the area a relaxing, rural feel, which brings visitors back year after year.
